Vaginal Hysterectomies, Vaginal & Abdominal Hysterectomy Procedures Advice

Are you looking for information or advice on vaginal hysterectomy? We are gynaecology specialists, offering a wide range of information on a variety of gynaecological procedures including vaginal hysterectomies.

A vaginal hysterectomy is a common operation to remove the uterus (womb) with over 50,000 procedures being carried out annually in the UK alone.  In some cases, depending on the patients condition one or both of the fallopian tubes and one or both ovaries may also be removed.  The hysterectomy will be achieved by an incision in the abdomen or through the vagina without leaving an external scar.

In an Abdominal Hysterectomy, an incision of approximately 6 inches is made either horizontally just above the pubic bone or vertically from just bellow the belly button down to the pubic bone.

In a Vaginal Hysterectomy, an incision is made at the top of the vagina, allowing for no external scaring and in most cases keyhole surgery instruments are used, commonly known as a laparoscopically-assisted hysterectomy.

Approximately one in five women can expect to have a hysterectomy, traditionally to deal with the following conditions:

Mennorrhagia - painful/heavy periods
Uterine Fibroids - benign growths present in the womb
Endometriosis - tissue belonging inside the uterus growing elsewhere in the pelvis
Uterine Prolapse - weak muscles causing the position of the uterus to drop in the pelvis
Cancer of the Ovaries, Cervix or Uterus

The operation is carried out using a general anaesthetic and will take around two hours in the majority of cases, requiring a stay in hospital of around 7 days unless the patients condition requires otherwise.

Most women suffer from no complications during this procedure, although the chance of complication depends on the patients general health and the exact procedure performed.  Any of our specialist gynaecologists will be happy to discuss this individually with you.

So if you are looking for information or advice on a vaginal hysterectomy, then please remember that we are gynaecology specialists with vast experience in a variety of gynaecological areas including vaginal hysterectomies.
